The Second Greatest Jingle Ever?
Over three years ago, I named what I felt was (and is) the greatest jingle in advertising history. I stand by my choice 1000%, but now I think I may have the second greatest jingle of all time. Trouble is, most of you won't remember it, unless you are my age (and I'm not divulging that bit of info). It's an old PSA for the Boy Scouts of America that aired way back in the 1970's (yeah, the boy scouts were around even at that point in time). Anyway, the jingle is a wonderful slab of Ides of March-meets-Jesus Christ Superstar meets, etc, etc. In short, wonderfully, if woefully inappropriately, funky and memorable. Also, I adore old TV ads that try to seem futuristic and instead give us a hilarious glimpse of how Neanderthal everything was, technologically speaking (check out that Colossus computer). Musically, I doubt that the whole of our current Top 40 houses as many musical hooks as in this 20-second ad.
Many, many thanks to MSTS1 for posting this on YouTube. I've been searching for it pretty much since YouTube's inception.
Enjoy. Click on the image to play the video.

Well, if you're gonna go totally nostalgic, may I suggest the Jimmy's Used Auto Parts jingle? As far as 10 second spots go, you could never go wrong with Betson's "Hey, where'd everybody go?" spots. PURE GENIUS!

Yeah, Krass Bros! I actually got to shake hands with Ben Krass once. He's about two feet tall and covered in makeup. Very cool guy, though.

I like the pool kid footage that goes forward, then backward. I think these were the first afros I ever saw on kids. The Jesus Christ Superstar comparison is spot-on.
ReplyDeleteNothing beats the Ideal jingle. Or the "Yeah, Jimmy" ad, which I never saw.
Now, how about compiling some of those Krass (is that it?) Brothers Suits 10-second spots

I think handling jars is how they get all those badges. I'm not sure. They've got a lot of boxes. Wow, Jimmy!

There are really a LOT of jars in that PSA! If I had known that they dealt with jars so much, I would've enrolled long ago! Whoooa, Elizabeth, where'd you get all of those jars?!?

Yeah, I have no idea what the hell's going on there. It looks like he has a specimen jar of some sort. Kinda creepy.

Was that some quick forward/backward/forward edit I saw in there? Now that's some real state-of-the-art stuff. I think they should do an updated version of that with a Scoutmaster sneaking into a tent at midnight with a Watchamcallit.
